a new contact came up as EX's iCloud e-mail?!

So I met a lovely guy the other night, and whilst we were out I had to borrow his phone to call my ex to check on the kids, as my phone had died.
Then I later programmed his number into my phone.
When he texted me the next day it came up as my ex's iCloud email address!
Has my ex done something dodgy to try and log my messages, or is there a reasonable explanation?
Most odd.

I would be straight down the apple store. Sometimes phones play up, I'd check the details are saved in contacts properly and you didn't accidentally save it under the wrong name (I've done that before saving a mobile number to a contact that was saved with just an email address.)
I would also make sure you have your own iCloud and iTunes account saved on the phone, otherwise I think he can access messages etc if you back up?
