Which Kindle?

I'm going on holiday in July and I'm thinking of buying a Kindle, however, I'm not sure which one to get.

Torn between these two: Kinke Fire HD, previous generation

Or

the original plain and simple one

I'm really only looking to read books on holiday with it but I'm now considering the Kindle Fire HD as DH and I share my an iPad at home.

Is the older Kindle Fire HD crap? Or is it worth the money for reading books and a bit of browsing?

The kindle fire is (IMO) not a very good kindle and not a very good tablet! It's sort of half both and isn't amazing at either.
I would buy the ordinary kindle (the cheapest one is still awesome) and save the rest of the money to buy a really good tablet.

I totally love my original - has one purpose and is great at it. Have had a play w a paperwhite and stil like the originsl best.

If you want to read books get the original or paperwhite.

The fires are tablets. They don't really do either well.

The paperwhite is so much better than the original, and I loved my original.

paperwhite is good as you can read them in the dark without having to buy a separate light or having to shell out for a lighted cover

My DD has the fire and it looks, and sounds, great.

The paperwhite screen is also closer in appearance to a real book than the screen of the original.

My paperwhite is my fave thing in the world. If you want it for reading books, get a paperwhite or the little original rather than any of the kindle fires.

My dd has a kindle fire and listens to audio books on it all the time, but for long periods of reading you're better off with the non-backlit screen.

The Paperwhite is excellent, I really love it.

I couldn't be without it.

I use the Kindle app on my phone more than my original Kindle now.

Iv'e ordered the original one. Seems like it will do what I need it to and is really cheap.

my eyes aren't as tired as with older version with side pull out light
