I've just decided to get one as a present for someone travelling to USA this summer.

Any to avoid? What's best - Kindle Paperwhite? Are the downloads the same price for all types of eReaders? Anything to watch out for, eg newest version glitches? Do any of them work better / less well in the US? She will be in a very hot and sunny state so I imagine good contrast is important, hence why I thought of the Paperwhite. But is there something better out there?

Let me have your experiences and thoughts.

I think the Kindles have the easiest way of buying books, providing she doesn't have any issues about using Amazon, I've used my kindle in the US with no problems although that was an old keyboard one.
My DS has a paperwhite one which he has been using in Italy with no problems.
Don't have any experience of non kindle e readers I'm afraid.

+1 for the kindle. I've had two (normal and now paperwhite) and they've got so much usage. The paperwhite is just amazing, the light on it is perfect and not 'backlit' so doesn't strain your eyes.

Also amazon also has a 'free fiction' section where new writers release their work to get a name, or the first of established series are made free to try and get you to buy them when you're done. 90% of the books I read are free and as I get through about 2 a week that helps a lot :)

Sounds like the Kindle is what I need then. Thanks.
