forgotten appleid/password

my friend was given an ipad already set up as a b'day present but didn't get round to using it til yesterday. Unfortunately he has no idea what the id information is because the giver set it up and he doesn't want to ask because then it would be apparent that he hadn't used it in months. Is there any way to recover it?

Try connecting to a pc and see if something can be done this way to reset to factory settings.
Personally I would not do this to any equipment owned by me because I would wonder what type of mate would buy someone an expensive piece of equipment and then set it up with password, email, name, dob and address/card details. Then fail to hand over this info.

If he goes to the App Store, to featured apps and scrolls down to the bottom, it should tell him which Apple ID the iPad is linked to. If it's an email address he knows, he can reset his password via this email address.
