Smartphone or iphone - please can I pick your brains?

My phone contract is up soon - I have a Samsung galaxy, but I am very tempted to get an iPhone (to go with my iPad - and I do realise that sounds a bit daft). Dh is worried because you only get a 1 year warranty with it, and extending the insurance is pricy.

So would iphone users recommend them? Have they been reliable, or will I find myself without a phone when it dies one year and one day into a two year contract? Are they better than smartphones?

For people who, have smartphones - what makes you choose them over iPhones? Are they better? And do you recommend your particular smartphone and why?

Many thanks, in advance! Thanks

I've had iPhone 3, 4 and 5 and never had a problem all on two year contracts. I always have insurance through my bank account but I've never had to use it.

A few other people I know that have iPhones have dropped them and cracked the screens which can be pricey but I've never had that problem with mine.

I've tried blackberry and Nokia lumia and don't like either in comparison to iPhone.

Thank you!

I love my iPhone. Had a 3, 4s and now a 5s.

Hubby has an android - I hate it when I borrow it. He loves it through.

I think the iPhone is far more intuitive to use with better apps.

I have iPhone 4s & love it... And you're right to think it will be better with your iPad. I have a Samsung tablet & it bugs me having to buy everything twice whereas if I had an iPad they would be synchronised Smile

I have both a samsung smartphone and an iphone. I definitely prefer the iPhone.

trixymalixy · 10/05/2014 00:59

I have a blackberry z10 for work and an iPhone. I much prefer the iPhone.

niceguy2 · 10/05/2014 08:33

There's no reason why is should cost more to insure your iphone. I've taken out a policy on my current account for £7.50 per month which insures mine and my wife's phone. They'll also cover iphones.

One thing to be aware of though is that usually there may well be a larger excess or special terms for iphones because suspiciously around about the time the latest iphone is released, apparently lots of iphone owners get careless and the phones fall down the toilet, get ran over or accidentally dropped from a great height.......

Love my iPhone, have had 3,4 and now 5.

I have a case which folds out and protects it when dropped.

I love how it syncs across PC with iCloud - no idea if this happens with Samsung.

Thank you all - I am really tempted by the iPhone, and this is the evidence I need to persuade dh!

Sitting on the fence here. At the moment have and love iPad and MacBook but a galaxy note.

I'm happy with both operating systems. Android is more flexible and appropriately priced. I get frustrated by apples " stranglehold " restrictions on the system eg blue tooth compatibility and things you just can't do on iPhones. They are also horrendously expensive.

Have you looked at the nexus 5 ? Probably the best android phone at the moment and a cracking price.

tribpot · 10/05/2014 20:02

Totally agree about the Nexus 5, it's fantastic. But equally if you want the simplicity of Apple-to-Apple between your iPhone and iPad that makes sense too.

However, the price difference is quite sharp - I'd be asking whether it was worth it (and I'm a Mac user so not at all anti-Apple).

500smiles · 10/05/2014 20:07

iPhone very time.

My 4 year old iPhone is still going strong

LemonBreeland · 10/05/2014 20:14

I only know one person out of many who has never broken an iphone screen. However since you have an ipad it makes sense. It will sync all of your photos and stuff. Just make sure you get a sturdy case for it from day one.

Grittzio · 10/05/2014 20:24

Had an iphone for 3 years and never broken the screen. Also have ipad and MacBook and love the way they all synchronise. Currently am hoping some more significant changes for iphone 6 as would like a bigger screen.

Lots of food for thought - thank you.

Niceguy - dh is going to check our insurance - the phones are on the house insurance I think so it may not cover tech faults after 1 year.

If you have an ipad then the iphone is the obvious answer. IMO

You might want to consider getting contract where you can use tethering?

ThatIsBoring · 11/05/2014 10:00

Our family has a lot of IPhones between us and none of us have ever broken a screen.

ellyzaz · 11/05/2014 20:02

I think you'll be fine without insurance. I'd go with a Nexus 5 or android phone myself and iphones just has too many limitations for 'power users' I find, but if extra options/configuration isn't an issue and you have an ipad then I think iphone would be best.
