How do I set up maximum privacy on Facebook to keep a v low profile on it?

I need to join Facebook for some work I am doing but I don't want to "announce" myself as being on it, or to give any access to anyone to look at my bit on it. What is the best way of doing this please? TIA.

Don't use your real name and hide yourself so no searches will tell anybody you're there?
