Just purchased an Apple TV to go with my I Pad. I bought correct hdmi cable and I have the required 1080 tv resolution. The set up is apparently simple but I can only get a blank tv screen. We have tried using another hdmi cable. We have followed advice and held remote down on menu and scrolling buttons. Tried everything we can think of but only get a white light on apple box, not even an apple logo, just a blank screen. Can't think of what to do other than return it to John Lewis. I would be so grateful for any help out there.

White light on the Apple TV is correct.
HDMI cables tend to work, or fail, there is no inbetween. So my guess would be an issue with the TV screen itself.

Try a different HDMI port on the TV if it has several.
Try turning on the Apple TV then turn on the TV - the order things are powered on can sometimes make a difference. On mine sometimes the screen just shows squiggly lines and tuning out of the HDMI to a different source and back again fixes it.

Sounds like you don't have the tv tuned to the right port. Try scrolling through?

What TV do you have? Manufacturer, model number?

Have you tried going through settings on the TV, is there anything there about setting resolution? HDMI should negotiate the best resolution the screen will do but it may be having trouble.

Thank you so much Cindy. The change of port worked and menu came up, set the language, then my wi fi network name came up. Clicked on that time and again. The blue box surrounds the name but no way to put my password in. I have entered time and again. Cor! ThoughtApple was user friendly!

Another message to my kind helpers Cindy and Elfina. Suddenly after starting again a verbal message said I could automatically set it up with my I Pad. Did this with Apple I D. Said it was doing it, waited and lo and behold what appears to be main menu came up. However, could not move the blue square from films. Tried usual coursers etc. nothing. Also couldn't mirror anything from I Pad. Then our Freeview recorder which had used the hdmi port now being used for the Apple TV won't show pictures now it has been reused in the other hdmi. So will have to keep changing ports. Thinking I will have to take it back to John Lewis after the weekend. Can't thank you enough for bothering about my problems on your holiday weekend.

Ps would say if I could move anything in the choice menu, I would keep it and just use occasionally but the courser does nothing. So can't move anything. Also no sign of a way to set up sharing in order to mirror I Pad. I was quite excited when the I Pad set it up automatically but a rigid screen gives me little hope. Tried the different sequence but no joy. Cindy gave me more help than Apple so well done. Thanks again.

The change of port plus the freeview thing now not working seems to indicate that the HDMI port on the TV has a problem.

Now you can see things on the Apple TV, can you move the selector around at all? If not, maybe it is a problem with the remote control.

Ipad won't mirror to the AppleTV unless both are on the same network. It sounds as though your AppleTV does not have the same network settings at this stage. Have you been able to enter in the WiFi password?

Cindy34 · 04/05/2014 14:08

With the blue square on Films, does it show images above of latest films available to rent? If not, then I would suspect no net connection.

The remote should be paired to the device. If you can not move around menu options, then maybe it has become unpaired. See link for how to pair the remote.

If you can move around some menu items, then remote is fine, it is something else.

With the AppleTV showing the blue box around Movies, can you move it right by pushing the white dot at 3 o'clock position on the remote? If so, the move to Settings, click the center circle button on the remote, the again for General, then move menu down to Network and select that, then try Test Network.

If you need it, you can get HDMI switches, which will allow you to connect multiple devices to one HDMI input on the TV.

Thank you so much. Yes I have got all the films set out above films. Nothing moves so am going to try pairing the remote as you suggest. Thanks also for the multiple hdmi suggestion as that would be great and we could use both without keep pulling things out. I don't think it is a network problem as it had no trouble downloading automatically. Will get dh to change cables back and have another go.

Ps also it originally recognised my network but would not move on from there. Only when I put I Pad next to it did I get anywhere. What a tangled web we weave.......when we get into technology!

Reckon you are right about remote being the cause of trouble. We have got a very clear picture of options but still no movement despite trying to pair several times. Eventually we get the lovely screen saver pictures floating about. That is all, can't get anything unless we switch off and then on again. Then same thing, an almost instant flash about home sharing, then straight to immobile screen showing films, tv program's, etc etc. the blue frame stays on the films. The light blinks in recognition but nothing else happens. Sorry to have been such a bother.

Does unpairing and then pairing the remote fix it?

Maybe it is a faulty remote.

What a pain. It should be quite easy to setup, though relies on having a working remote.

HappydaysArehere · 05/05/2014 22:56

For Cindy who has been such a great help. The update is that at the eleventh hour just before packing it up to return, had one last attempt at pairing the remote. Held it right up to Apple TV and it sprang into action. Took a while to sort out how to set up for air play but now itis mirroring the I pad. All I need to do is follow your advice and get a dual connector for the hdmi port. Off to Maplins in the morning or will use your Amazon link. Brilliant job done by Cindy! Thank you again.
