Best online photo storage?

Just that really...I have tons of photos of my beautiful 2yo on my less than beautiful 3yo laptop that's about to explode. I'm sure there's a better way of securing them than an external hard drive...like a cloudy type online thing.

I've heard of Flickr but don't really want ANOTHER.email address and this seems attached to yahoo.

Where can I store them online? If possible to be private, unless I allow access eg to my mum who lives the other side of the country.

I have an iPhone but don't necessarily want the 'cloud' to be tied to that.

Thanks!

We use drop box and amazon cloud

niceguy2 · 28/04/2014 22:33

Dropbox is the defacto standard but it's a bit stingy by modern standards (2GB Free).

Onedrive by Microsoft give you 7GB assuming you already have a hotmail/live/outlook email address.

Google Drive gives you 15GB Free. You'll need a googlemail/gmail account though.

Up to you which you want to use.

I use onedrive and it's great. Offers quite a bit of storage too, I have 2000 photos stored on there already. It's also good as you can access from phone, tablet or laptop. Hope that helps. Wink

Hmm. Just worked out it's 23 gb worth. May need to think big.

Flickr offer 1TB of storage. Is it worth having a Yahoo email for that?

HenriettaTurkey · 02/05/2014 10:09

Do you know I think it might be. Thanks for all the advice...I'm going to have a play!

I use google photos/picasa.

A word of warning - do lots and lots or research now as once you have committed yourself to one provider it is a total PITA to transfer everything to a new provider.

sunbathe · 02/05/2014 10:20

Worth checking if you give away a right to use your photos, when you use a cloud service.

HenriettaTurkey · 02/05/2014 13:31

Good point. Had a try uploading pics to Flickr, on maximum privacy using an old yahoo account & it was all fine till I pressed the final button & then it said there were errors that needed fixing. Angry

Wondering if it's a connection issue as I can't see anything else obvious. But then there's a good chance I'd miss something obvious anyway!

Will try plugging laptop into internet connection & see if it's better than wifi.

did it work out in the end, henrietta? watching with interest as same quandary here. You are right to be wary of just one back up as mine blew up almost simultaneously with hard drive causing much sadness...I may go over the top & go for paid cloud backup as well as free cloud as well as hard drive backup...
