DW clicked on a link this morning which looked perfectly innocent and it ran some installer in the background. I spent the whole evening removing various malware from the PC.

All my own boxes use Linux for this reason...

Malwarebytes and Emsisoft will identify and remove (if wished) malware that your own security software may not have caught including PUPs. Both have free versions although they have to be updated and (complete) scans run by hand - so probably a good idea to set aside some time once a week to do it while you're otherwise occupied.
