I've used Movie Maker before

But I have problems with file endings & it is driving me wild!!

Is there an easy way to sort it all out - do I need to buy something....if so what?

VOB I think is a file off a DVD. Not sure why you would want to play such a file directly, rather than playing it as a DVD.

VLCplayer (videolan) I suspect will play the file, or at least give info as to what is in the file, such as video codec used.

I'm trying to edit the DVD to produce a showreel (I have permission)

A VOB file is indeed the contents of a DVD - video, menus, etc. The format is based on MPEG.

You won't be able to do anything with the file while it is on the DVD. Copy it onto your PC then rename it by changing the extension from vob to mpeg, e.g. fred.vob would become fred.mpeg. Movie Maker should then be able to handle the file.

Blimey - that sounds easy

I think I must be doing something wrong as I can't change the file type (or at least I don't know how)

I used formatfactory to convert them to .WVM & lost the sound

Bugger!
