Updating to the new iOS and backing up my phone

I think I am the only person on the planet still using the old iOs6 - embarrassingly because I am too scared to update it

Do I have to back up my phone (photos, music etc) before I do the update? Or do I risk losing all my photos and everything if I don't back it up first?

It's an iPhone 5 if that makes any difference...

You shouldn't lose stuff, but it's sensible to back up first.

I should add I never back up before updating iOS and so far have never lost any music or pictures.
Are you using iCloud?
