Yahoo! mail increasingly shoddy - what should I use instead?

After being with Yahoo! since the 1990s, I'm finding it absolutely shocking post last year's revamp.

It won't send messages half the time, gives masses of error messages, is very slow and I HATE the 'conversation' setting where it's nigh on impossible to see if you just copied in someone who shouldn't have been copied in...

So what's simple, reliable and free please?!

I'd say GMail (Google Mail)... Has undergone change every now and then (I've been using it for several years) but pretty reliable, free, and there's a GMail app for Android phones (and you pretty much need a Google Account to download any extra apps anyway).

If you like mail applications (Eudora, Apple Mail, Outlook Express, etc) then you can enable POP/IMAP and you can then use the features on your laptop/ desktop and (rarely) use the web browser interface.

I have been using it heavily for years, have at least 7 accounts and a few hundred thousand mail messages (I pretty much only delete spam, and the spam filtering is quite good, in my view).

You could do worse than give it a go... (Microsoft's Outlook web based mail is a somewhat different story... now at 'outlook.com', but also live.com, and hotmail.com ... all under the same Microsoft umbrella).

Use hotmail buzzr if you have an iPhone / iPad for best performance
Yahoo is bordering on unusable since the revamp/cost cutting! I only access it via my outlook inbox as the web interface and any apps are terrible.

I've moved a lot of my personal stuff over to GMail, after, time after time, emails I'd sent took up to a day to arrive, using yahoo.

i like Gmail....been there since the first gmail days

it's great for phone use as the account breaks down stuff to 3 categories, Primary, Social and Promotions ...aside from the usual filters

I never get any spam, and my phone only ever pings for primary stuff, then I can go look at delete the other stuff when it suits.

It does want each gmail to have a googleplus account, but it's not that hard to sidestep.

Hi can you have more than one gmail account set up on your iPhone?

I have two main email accs one gmail and one yahoo (old phone could only be 'logged in' to one account on same service at a time) but decided today I've had enough of yahoo. Typing a simple message takes ages as the text keeps scrolling away from where you set it. I HATE the conversation view and can't find anything. Everything is soo complicated now! So looking for alternative (and I do miss tabs!)

Wait just found out you can get rod of conversation view in settings and get tabs back too - great, now they just have to make it actually work....

Lots to think about, and I'm feeling a bit sad getting rid of my trusty old @yahoo.com addy after so many years.

Anyone use gmail 'mail fetcher' or similar so they can keep their old accounts ticking over?

I have an old yahoo account and in the last 5 years also set up a gmail account. It's possible to link them, so emails that get sent to my yahoo address automatically get forwarded to my gmail account. It means I don't need to be organised and let everyone know my new email address

Plum, yes I have two gmail accounts on my iphone - one work the other personal. Easy to separate.

Gmail is not bad for a free service, but remember, as with all free email services you are not the customer, you are the product they are selling to their advertisers.

If you value your email and want any support, you should get your own domain. It costs very little and it's not complicated. I think I'm paying around £15 per year with virtualnames.co.uk.

Might be a "product" they sell to advertisers, but frankly, whether using the GMail app on Android, or Chrome or Firefox, I never see those ads.

I may form part of their statistics, as a user, but doubt my inclusion means I see much more or less of specific ads on other sites where Google is involved.

I sometimes have to go to a different laptop that I've not added "AdWare blockers" to, just to see what the average user might see :)

I'm not talking about what you see, I am talking about your significance in their scheme of things. Have you ever tried to get any support from gmail?

If your email matters to you, you should use a service that doesn't delegate support to robots that refer you to irrelevant answers.

Hating yahoo too now. I've got a gmail account but don't like it either
