How do I make a website / get one made?

I have volunteered to find out about this for our school wrap around club. I have no idea where to start!

A basic one?
something like webs.com and get your domain name from a company like go daddy or get it from them.

ive done my own website on joomla, my husbands companys website also joomla, my sisterssite (shes an artist) a freebie on webs, one in east africa on drupal, and I redirect domain names for small groups that I maintain on my site.
so it really depends how complex you want your site to be.

First, decide what you want the site to do, and what kind of thing you want to include. Keep it simple to start with. Make a plan on paper if you can.

Then consider what budget you have - if any :)
This will give you some idea of your options.

For free sites, you might think about google sites www.google.com/sites/help/intl/en/overview.htmls , Wordpress.com, or moonfruit.com

If you've a little money to spend, you might think about some inexpensive hosting. Or might you be able to tag onto the school's web space somehow?

If you do consider hosting your own site, you'll want a willing volunteer to create a small site for you. If your budget is large, you will probably find someone locally who'd do it. Otherwise, with a little study you could do it yourself?

bt do community websites free too, mostly stuff like clubs, scouting, activity groups and smaller charities. is this any use?

My partner and I have been making websites since 2010 - a good custom made website that you can update yourself should start at £1,000 minimum.

If your budget is much less than that ;) then I recommend signing up for an account at www.wordpress.com - pricing ranges from free to much more. A free account involves adverts etc - these can be removed for a small annual fee.

WordPress powers over 20% of the internet - so it's the one to go for :)
