we got a sony vaio for £350 on very. so far so good. Not tried word processing on it tho. try testing a few in currys or somewhere?

This Lenovo looks pretty reasonable. Download LibreOffice for word processing, unless you absolutely have to have Microsoft Word.

sony's are good laptops, but they have just decided to pull out of the pc/laptop game so expect a few bargains in the near future for them, but also with usual end of line products expect little or no support.

main ones to go for on a budget would be asus or acer.

If you are doing a lot of typing a proper office-style desktop with decent keyboard is easier to use than a laptop.

Get as big a screen/monitor as you can.

Check carefully what software it comes with or you might end up paying extra for programs.

We have Linux open source software that is free, but our DS works in IT and built computer for us, and he knows what's what! Computer was £240, but we already had monitor and keyboard.
