Sorry if this has been done before.

DS getting mini iPad for Christmas. Managed to set it up but with my apple id as want to be able to lock internet etc and him to come to me if he wants to download anything.

It's put all my itunes music (from my ipod onto his ipad). How do I get my music off his device?

ALso, do I now need to plug in his ipad to set up itunes? I've looked on Apple and and other forums but it's all so confusing. I followed instructions from one website to set up another library for DS but my computer wasn't doing what the instructions said it would.

It's so confusing!!

Any advice would gratefully received!

You can choose what you synchronise so could get rid of the music that way.

sasha1250 · 20/12/2013 21:27

Should I plug the i pad to the computer and open itunes-am scared to do it in case it messes my account and everything else up!

Connect the iPad to the comp. Open iTunes on the comp. On the rhs you will see iPad listed. Click on the iPad name and the the main body of the page will come up with a Summary of the iPad. There is a list of items above i.e. Info.. Apps..Music etc. Click on Music.
Under "Sync Music" you will see a option of Entire music library and Selected playlists, click this one. Look down the list of options to load (sync) and click on the ones you want loaded.
Go to the bottom of the page and on the right hand side you will see a box with Sync in it. Click it and it will put the playlist/artist/ albums etc you have selected, onto the iPad. The ones you don't want will be removed from the iPad. Your listings are not affected.
When its done click on the little up-arrow beside the iPad name…and you can unplug it safely from the comp.
Hope this helps

Opps…"on the Left Hand side you will see the iPad listed", sorry its late.

sasha1250 · 21/12/2013 10:28

widowerbutok thanks so much for your reply. Getting desperate-went onto an ipad forum and have had 168 views but not a single reply!!

I did end up connecting the ipad but it's come up as "sasha's ipad". That's not a problem as DS will come to me whenever he wants to download anything.

However, I decided to experiment and delete a song-which also disappeared from my own iPad(just to confuse things I have an ipad too-but I don't think I have ever connected it to the computer although my songs appear on it when I download onto my ipod-does this mean I have icloud?? (a box DID come up saying if I deleted the song it would be deleleted from my ipad and iPod-it didn't disappear from my ipod as I always connect it when I download music but would it be deleted if I did connect?)

Sorry for all the questions-I could quite happily throw the whole lot out of the window!!

Am thinking of starting again and renaming it "DS's ipad"-would that be easier?

Could I create a folder of some of my music and load it onto his ipad then? Or would I have to repurchase the music he wanted from mine?

Tbh I created a separate account for DS as I didn't want all his games etc on my phone and my apps on his iPad but it does mean we need to buy things twice if we both want them but it was too confusing doing it the other way.

LittleBearPad · 21/12/2013 10:52

If you set up a separate account and then enable home sharing between the two you should be able to sort it as you want to.

NoComet · 21/12/2013 10:55

you tick, sync, swear and try again, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. iTunes has a mind of it's own.

I just don't plug my phone into the computer and let the DDs mess with it.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 21/12/2013 10:55

There's an option to "manage music manually"

I have 3 iPads, 2 iPhones and 3iPods linked to my iTunes account and we have separate playlists on each. No way is 7 yr old DD having Green Day!

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 21/12/2013 10:56

You can stop this happening - there's an option in "settings" on the device to stop it downloading stuff onto other devices automatically.

NoComet · 21/12/2013 10:57

Home sharing, never heard of that, does work when students leave home. DD has loads of ibooks on my account.

sasha1250 · 21/12/2013 12:08

How do you set up a separate account? Should I reset his ipad and give him his own apple id?

I did see the thing re home sharing-I don't bloody know what half the stuff is and am frightened to click anything! :(

To solve the music:
In iTunes, click on the device name.
Click on the Summary tab.
Check "manually manage music and videos"

This will stop it synching your music with his iPad. I then have a playlist for each device and this is the list of songs I synch.

Unless I've misunderstood the problem.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 21/12/2013 12:15

I also have the "synch only checked songs and videos" box checked on the summary page.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 21/12/2013 12:17

On the Settings for the iPad itself, go to "iTunes and App stores" and there's a section called "Automatic Downloads". Turn off all three options (Music, Books and Apps). This will stop new purchases automatically appearing on other devices but you can still download them free of charge on other devices if you wish.

sasha1250 · 21/12/2013 23:51

Thanks for all your replies.

Just getting myself more confused here.

Am manually managing music. Plugged in DS's iPa and gone into library, ticked all songs I thought he would like. Synced it. It downloaded the one playlist I ticked but the ones I didn't want have a little cloud with an arrow pointing downwards coming out of the cloud. I assumed I needed to send them to iCloud so enabled that and it synced (or something) but the whole library is still there. All the songs I ticked don't have the little cloud next to them!

I think I'll try and get hold of a Apple advisor. Failing that, will re-set and set it up with his own Apple id and perhaps set up home sharing-at least I'm learning a bit more!

We have 5 devices all running off one Itunes account and all have different apps, different music etc on. We keep everything as manual as possible, so that nothing gets automatically loaded onto the other devices via ICloud. So it can be done. But it is all very confusing to start with.

Little clouds with arrows - are you seeing these on the Ipad? It means they are not on the device but you can load them from your account by clicking on them and entering the itunes password. Have you set restrictions so that the password needs to be entered every time, that's really important.

sasha1250 · 22/12/2013 00:28

Whoknows, DH just managed to get rid of my music but we decided to reset the ipad to get rid of my apple id. Now it won't connect to wi-fi :(

AND ALL of the music is back on but you're right, the songs with the cloud next to them won't play but I don't want them on there.

I feel pathetic but am tearful trying to sort this out-feel so stupid. AM going to bed-had enough-thanks everyone. Will probably go into an APple store.

We've got three iTunes accounts but if one of us downloads something that another one of us wants then we sign out of our account in the settings, sign in with the other persons ID and then download what we want from the cloud.

I have a British iTunes account and dh has a US one.

DoesntLeftoverTurkeySoupDragOn · 22/12/2013 06:47

AND ALL of the music is back on but you're right, the songs with the cloud next to them won't play but I don't want them on there.

Look in the ipad settings under iTunes and App Store and ensure iTunes Match is turned off.

RustyBear · 22/12/2013 09:17

By default the iPad will show all music/videos etc that are on your account, but those that are not actually on your device will have the download symbol next to them. You can change your settings so that you don't see any music that's not physically on the iPad- go to Settings-ITunes &app store-and turn the Show All-Music and/or video buttons to Off. Further down that page you can also turn off the 'automatically download new purchases, as Soupy suggested.

sasha1250 · 24/12/2013 09:35

I managed to sort it out in the end-thanks for all your help!!

Merry Christmas Xmas Smile
