New phone for Xmas

I have got my son a new phone for Xmas. His current phone takes a normal size sim, the new phone takes a micro sim.

I have ordered a new sim from orange which is a normal size with a micro sim within it.

Now assuming the people at orange won't be working Xmas morning, should I put the new sim in his current phone (he knows he's getting a new phone for Xmas, just doesn't know what) and phone orange now and get the new sim working?

The new phone is unlocked for any network , so am correct in thinking I can just insert new sim in new phone and all will be fine and dandy if I've activated the sim in the old phone before Xmas?

Hope that makes sense!

You could ring the provider he is with now and get the PAC code, that way he can keep his number etc you would then just ring orange and tell them the code it takes a few days to go through, or yes you can just pop it in his old phone and activate it like you said

Thanks for the reply.

He's with orange now and staying with orange but it's a different sized sim that, I presume, has to be activated?

I'd put the new sim into his old phone on Tues night & activate it so he can start using his new phone as soon as he opens it on Christmas morning.

Having said that, when I put my new nano sim from Virgin in my new phone (kept same number, provider & sim only contract), it was an automated service so I didn't actually speak to anyone to activate the new SIM card. I'd imagine Orange will have a similar set-up, so it could be done on Christmas morning.

Get a sim converter , 99p on eBay, and use that to put the new sim in the old phone in the mean time. You can swap the sims over without him knowing then.

I got mini SIM for my dd from the EE shop, at the same time old was deactivated. Staff told me it would take perhaps 1 hour for the transfer, I inserted it next day and it all worked straight away.

So in our case it was the same contract/number just that change of SIM.

I am not sure what's happening in your case as I understand he is currently using old SIM until Christmas.

Did you order the new SIM as an upgrade to the old one? If so, then it should just 'take over' the account. But if not, then you'll need to activate on first use and will be a new phone number.
