Why can't I play ipod shuffle on new Sony audio system?

Humph. Bought a new Sony system last week, CD player, radio and "made for ipod and iphone". Has USB port. Why won't ipod shuffle work? Plugs into USB port like MP3 player, the sony system says 'reading' for a while, then says device error. The ipod shuffle works through speakers at work, etc, so can't see why. The Sony guide doesn't mention it, just says compatible with iphone and ipod, but still.... am feeling grumpy as wanted to play DS1's music on it! Any thoughts?

Because it doesn't behave like a USB stick full of MP3s, and it doesn't use the dock connector. "iPod" in this context means "except Shuffles" unless explicitly included.
