How to clear search history on an iPad

I've gone into settings and can see the option to clear history but it's not highlighted so I can't use it.

Ps it's not that I've been searching any dodgy sights! I just don't want daughter to see what I've been looking at for Christmas presents.

I just click on the open book picture up there in the right hand corner of the screen and it gives me the option to clear history.

I've done that and can see the option to 'clear' but it's not highlighted so won't work

Have you already cleared the history?

Have you got 'private browsing' turned on?

No I haven't cleared the history and have no idea if I've got private browsing on. I've looked at everything I can think of in settings but can't find anything to turn on/off

Is you ipad running iOS7?

Yes it is. I followed the instructions given above but the option the delete history isn't highlighted

The link given earlier by widower is pre iOS7

Anyway, I did a little research and I think the following may work????

SETTINGS >>> General >>> RESTRICTIONS >>and check if it says 'On'. If it does, enter the restrictions PIN >>>>WEBSITES >>>> select ALL WEBSITES

I didn't know that this feature existed before. It would be really useful to check what your kids are up to
