I have no idea about technology whatsoever. Please could someone tell me if I have to buy separate products to do all this stuff, or is there a device which would do it all:

  • play music for personal listening, for attaching to speakers of some kind for playing at home, and also preferably for playing in the car (my car has a radio/cd player but apparently there's a clever contraption you can buy so it will do mp3s??)
  • read e-books (preferably ones I've bought from Amazon as that's my usual place to buy from).
  • watch films (and maybe tv) occasionally
  • for my 6 year old to play games on sometimes
  • use the internet (not essential, but I suppose it is if I want tv-watching ability)

It doesn't have to be the most popular brand, but I'd like each job done well so I'll buy separate devices if there isn't a good jack-of-all-trades.

Thanks and sorry if this all seems incredibly thick!

An iPad (mini or full size) or a.n other tablet(? kindle fire HD) connected to car stereo by aux cable should do it.

Hi - Member is quite right, most android tablets will do all the things you ask (plus they have come down so much in price) - You can also get all the accessories you need such as good quality speakers which can either plug into your tablets headphone/audio out socket or operate wirelessly via bluetooth to enhance your music listening experience (the drawback of the in-built speakers on most tablets, is that they do sound somewhat tinny). Plus you will also be able to play MP3 from your tablet through your cars own music system - This can be done by plugging an in-car MP3 player device into the auxillary (aka cigarrete lighter) socket in your vehicle which will in turn then enable you to play music from an SD/MMC card, a USB memory stick or from the 3.5mm audio out jack of any other device (e.g your tablet) through your car's own stereo system. Suprisingly these devices can range from as little as £5 upwards but like most things in life, you will get better quality from paying a little more - Make sure to research & read any product reviews.

Thankyou, both of you! That's very helpful :) I'll look into all your suggestions.

Hudl!

Galaxy tab 2.

Both will do what you want in 7inch format for £100 or so.

Yup an iPad would too but for £399 up...

You might find you want an ebook reader too for ease of reading for hours and hours but fir the odd 30 mins whilst waiting for a child etc reading on a tab is fint.

Don't forget- wifi only or 3G - that really bumps up the costs both in the device itself but also re tethering or other internet provision (can be free eg samba or ovivo though)
