Streaming iPad through TV

I have a first gen, iPad which I love for Netflix etc, but unfortunately I can't stream this particular model through the TV. So I've recently ordered an iPad mini with the camera etc which should be able to stream through the TV.

I need my iPad for streaming because I live abroad so I have a VPN on the ipad that makes it possible to hide my IP address and then access Netflix, iPlayer etc.

My question is do I have to buy the Apple TV to do the streaming or would it be as simple as plugging the iPad with its connector into the TV and taking it from there?

After forking out for a new iPad I don't really want to have to fork out more for the Apple TV if I can get away with it.

apple have some offiicial lightening to vga adapters so, there may be cheaper versions, then you could get a vga cable to connect to your tv, if it has a socket. You know because it looks like the ones that go in pc monitors. this would set you back about £30.

i have an apple tv and i find its fantastic, if you steam alot its worth investing in. I use it to stream skygo on the tv, from my phone the odd youtube clip for mates and my wife after a day with our boy show pictures from her phone on the tv. it is a £100 but ebay may get you one cheaper.
