Why would I not want a Huawei Ascend Y300?

And what would I want instead?

My beloved and ancient Samsung has died and I need a new telephone. I would like a smart phone but it's very much a question of money - I don't really have any. :)

My needs are: make and receive telephone calls,
send and receive texts (Whatsapp would be good),

take the odd photos of DS,
check FB,
surf MN when bored at softplay,
be able to google and wiki occasionally,
possibly upload an music album or two.

I don't really need if for video (youTube) and I don't play games.

I've been looking online at the Huawei Ascend Y300 which I can get from amazon.de for 109 euros. I don't want a contract and just want to put my existing pre-pay sim card in it. I live abroad but can buy a phone online or in the UK.

Any thoughts? Anyone got one, and want don't you like about it?

I bought one for DS. It isn't very good - it's slow and there's a lack of storage on the actual phone, and the camera is not good.

Switching between apps is not great and the UI is fairly horrible - Huawei do not seem to have done a huge amount to the stock android software but pretty much everything they have done is bad - I haven't figured out how to delete icons from the screen, only hide them, for a start. It is one of the most annoying versions I have used.

Really the only things I can say in its favour are that it is cheap and it is fairly sturdy, so it was a decent enough choice for a 10yo but if it was mine I would have thrown it at something by now.

If you are not determined to have an android phone, and if it is available where you are (I am guessing non-UK as you mention Euros) look at the Nokia Lumia 520, which is a Windows phone, and is firmly at the low end of the market, but it has fantastic specs for the money and is generally regarded by a lot of people as being one of the best smart phones for the price.

I haven't really looked into the pros and cons of the operating systems.
