Mac help needed

Ex P moved out a few weeks back, lying cheating bastard had another woman on the go.

Anyway, when he lived here, his computer was the main one, and my macbook could be accessed by him remotely. Will he still be able to do this even though he's not here?

Reason I ask, is there was a search on the history today for 'escort' - and an area near where we live. I know this is something he has looked for before so it could be that for some reason I clicked on something this morning, but I don't recall anything strange coming up.

What do I need to do to ensure he isn't accessing my computer?

This is technically possible if there has been software installed on the Mac for remote access. The first thing I would do it to temporarily disconnect from any network connections and then have a look your applications for any installed software such as logmein etc. Usually someone at your end will get a notification or pop-up if someone tries to access your PC but this isn't always the case. Have a look under in the software section of system profiler to see if there's anything dodgy.

Hi, try going into System Preferences -Sharing- and see what areas have been approved (a tick in the box) and take out the ticks. Then change the password of the Mac. Got these suggestions after `googling' the prob...lol

I assume you have the operating system disk for the mac? If so, format the thing and start again. You've no idea what he may or may not have installed, so deletes the lot and start over.

If you don't know how to do that, take it to an apple store and ask them to format it.

Oh and I just remembered, if you are using Google Chrome on your Macbook, there is an option to synch your search profiles across numerous computers and mobile devices. So it "could" be that your Google Chrome is logged in as him and when he is at home searching for "Escorts", he is unaware that it is being uploaded to Google's central servers and then passed back to any other machines with his profile signed in.

I think is highly unlikely that someone would use a computer to remotely access another person's in order to then carry out a search... unless that search was something incriminating.

However, considering that you say he is a lying cheating bastard, I would carry out a complete format of your macbook. This will remove any possibility that he has put any sort of remote access software in there and give you peace of mine. Formatting is quite an easy process, you just put the software disk in and reboot the computer and boot from disk and carry out a format and new install. If you need any advice, just let me know.

Make sure you then change any passwords you have online. Don't do it beforehand, because (assuming a worst case scenario), he could have installed a keylogger which would let him know exactly what you are typing (I've tested them out myself).

These are all easy to remove using a format and nothing will be left on your computer after that.

Also change your router password.

i've done the sharing thing - unticked it, also file sharing but not sure that will bugger up anything i want to send to people. We'll see. Thanks widowerbutok.
