iPad frozen, says 'iPad not backed up'

But when I click on ok, the message doesn't disappear so I can't do the actual back up. It's a brand new iPad, present for my parents. This is the second time I've used it, wanted to put some apps on for them.

Can't switch it off either as the message doesn't disappear! Wondered if a tone had any ideas before I call apple tomorrow?

Have you tried holding down the on/off button and the main button for several seconds to turn it off?
