Free Internet security?

I had a search and the threads that came up were quite old so I was wondering if anyone had any recent recommendations and links to somewhere I could get security software?

Just brought a netbook for uni and will be using it for research and typing up assignments, won't be using it to store photos, games, songs etc as I don't want to slow it up.
