Can anyone recommend a good point-and-shoot compact camera for £100 or less?

I'm not a photographer and not wanting to become one but just want a camera that can take good non-blurry pictures of family and friends and maybe of the occasional interesting thing/building/landscape that I see. One that could capture my ever-moving 4 year old without freezing up would be a bonus. The camera on my phone is fairly rubbish- my daughter always looks miles away and blurry as she runs away and it can't zoom in to pick out cool things. A beautiful heron (or perhaps a crane?) came to see us in the park the other day but you could not possibly identify it from the terrible picture I took on my phone! Is it possible to get a camera for £100 or less (I am skint) that will enable a fairly inept photographer to take nice pictures ?

We always look at the recommendations on web sites such as Amazon which are posted by very competent users. Also look at What Camera. They have done all the tests and tell you the best (and worst) attributes of budget cameras. I think you would rarely go wrong with a Canon. There is a wealth of info on line but often magazines and users agree and you may also find a very good camera reduced in the sales if you do not need the latest model.

Panasonic Lumix have a good reputation. This one looks like a bargain. I have no knowledge of the store selling it, so check it carefully.

I am a photographer so I have a small arsenal of camera equipment.

This is the compact I have at home and take out with me on nights out or family days where I really can't be bothered to lug a DSLR with me.

Canon Powershot SX220

It's a bit above your budget but in my opinion worth it. Most point and shoot cameras are tragic. This one's alright. The built in face detection will help focus on your DD. The only niggle is if you hold the camera wrong, the flash doesn't pop up. But you soon get used to that.

I'm a bit ashamed to admit that by the time you posted it was too late as I zoomed out (geddit?!) prior to a day trip en famille yesterday and bought a panasonic lumix SZ3 from my local Argos. Seemed to be the only thing that my local store had in stock that wasn't utterly panned by the Amazon critics and I couldn't bear the idea of more blurry mobile pictures from our day out. As emergency impulse purchases go, I'm quite pleased.:) The photos I took yesterday are vastly superior to my usual mobile snaps. Battery life was not that great though (though this may be because I was not able to fully charge it before leaving for our trip) so ended up taking some blurry mobile snaps as well! Many thanks to everyone for your help.
