The laptop got a virus. We had the virus removed but the laptop is now running very slow and everything takes hours!

We want to wipe the whole thing as we were advised that this will make it run faster. (is this the case?!)
Problem is we haven't got any of the systems discs to install things again.

Is there any way we can do it ourselves?

All help very much appreciated :)

You can wipe it,this will restore it to factory settings but its a bit of a pain as you have to reinstall all the windows updates again.

What make and model is it and what version of windows is it running? It may have a restore partition,if so you wont need any system discs as its all on the hard drive.

When you removed the virus, did you scan it for malware, malware can play havoc with your system. If not download, malwarebytes, its free and recommended by all the geeks.Remeber to update it after installation, then do a full scan,it will take time,if it finds anything it will give you instructions how to delete.

Thank you :)

It's windows vista, the laptop is a Toshiba (purchased 2007).

I ran malware bytes and updated it today, all fine there.

DP has just done something with a program and it's found lots of Problems wrong with the registry.

Get a nifty little program called CCleaner, either direct from Piriform or download from FileHippo. The free version is more than adequate. It will clean any rubbish from the hard drive and basically overwrite those 'bad' bits. Then get it to do a registry check, it will clear out that too. It's brilliant.

Please do not mess with the registry unless you know what you are doing, you can make a problem a 100 times worse.
Do you have the model of the laptop or do you know if it has a recovery partition.I have a HP laptop from this time that has a recovery partition.

Chanatan · 21/08/2013 18:31

Ccleaner will only delete what is not supposed to be in the registry,it wont correct anything that is corrupted or missing.

I've just looked at the base of the laptop..

It says:

Toshiba
Satellite A100 -065
Model: PSAANE - 02502EEN

Had a look but cant find a definite answer to whether or not this laptop has a recovery partition. Some people say no,it was supplied with recovery discs but als found a link to this, may be worth a try.

Have a look under "my computer",what drives are listed? C drive should hold your vista operating system,is there a D drive,if so what is it called?
