Help!! I can't download from itunes to my ipad mini! What am I doing wrong??

I can't get it to work. Gets about 99% there then stops and says it hasn't worked. Then says "try again" or "done".
I'm desperate to download stuff for the 12 hour drive on Wednesday!!
It's a new iPad mini, do I need to click something in settings or something?

Downloading what?

Does it do the same if you try to download an app?

Seems odd, given it is getting to 99% it seems to be downloading something.

It won't download a movie, tv programmes or even a simple song

I called Apple and they were surprisingly unhelpful. I might see if I can get into an apple store today at some point.

Any joy? Seems odd it gets to 99%. Almost as though it's just not giving you the icon to see it.
