Impact of swapping SIM card?

We are going to be going abroad soon and I'm thinking of buying a prepaid SIM card when i get there. Obviously this changes my phone number Grin.Dd thinks I might lose my settings and apps. I've exported my contacts on to the phone. Are there any other effects I ought to worry about?
Thanks!

It's an android ( s3). Going to Iceland :) it seems I can buy the new sim at the airport and get 300mb of data for about £20 and have cheaper phonecalls. O2 want £2/day for 15mb and 50p per call. Going for 2 weeks.
We thought if we swapped the sim on my phone and kept dhs phone as being the contact home phone.

Data is my most important thing as we are going to be in really remote places and need to check weather and road conditions.

You shouldn't lose your settings and apps. My Android phone coped fine when I went to New Zealand and put a local SIM in.

The biggest issue is likely to be whether your phone is locked to the O2 network. You need to make sure it;s unlocked, otherwise your local SIM won't work.
