Facebook: can I recover this material?

A couple of weeks ago someone I'm friends with on fb posted a series of unpleasant status updates. They were a bit incoherent and initially I dismissed them as drunken rantings. But the next morning they continued and the updates were increasingly nasty and clearly aimed at a mutual friend, and to a lesser extent also at me and a few other people. I failed to take screenshots and by the afternoon they had deleted all of the material. The only thing I managed to recover was an offensive profile picture that was still visible on my phone before it synchronised.

Since then other stuff has happened and we are now probably going to seek legal advice. We suspect there might be mental health issues behind it all and we don't want to land an ill person in trouble. But then the posts were actually quite threatening in light of what has gone on since. Is there any way to recover these updates and pictures? I've tried very inexpertly searching cached pages (google, bing and yahoo) but I keep getting the page of another person with the same name. Clearly I'm not enough of a nerd to pull this off, so? I need your geeky wisdom, please!
