Buying iphone storage

I need to update to IOS6 (Ihave an iphone4) but hvnt enough storage either on my phone or icloud (only have the free storage). it seems I can buy more icloud storage for £14 p. a. Would this enable me to update (with it being icloud as opposed to 'on my phone'? It'd offer an additional 10GB storage and update requires 644MB... Or don't updates work with icloud storage? I do know I can update by plugging mobile into a computer but laptop's broken so can't do this.

You shouldn't have to buy storage to update.

If there isn't sufficient room on the device just delete some stuff off, update and then replace.

If you go into Settings - General - usage it will list your apps with sizes, so you can work out which ones to delete to give you the space you need. Once you have iOS6, the App Store updates too, and you will find a section called Purchased on the Updates screen. Touch Not on this Phone and you should get the ones you deleted before the upgrade at the top with a little downoad symbol.

Getting extra Cloud storage won't help with the update - the extra space has to be on the phone itself - the phone has to download and install the new iOs before it can delete the old one, so for a while you have both on there. Once the process is finished, you'll get the space back again.
