How do I back up my computer?

I've bought a zip drive, which I want to use to ensure that if my PC ever dies, I have all the essential files.

The only programmes I use are ITunes and Office.

It's a Seagate zip drive and when I connect it, it gives me the option to back up the 'Personal' folder, the 'Public' folder or the 'C' drive. The contents of what Seagate calls the personal and public folders appears to just be the desktop contents, so I guess I'm going for the C drive.

My question is, do I need to back up the entire C drive? Or do I just need to back up file components for programmes where I've created/added content, e.g. ITunes, Documents, Pictures, etc.?
