iPad or home computer?

Hi, our laptop has packed up and cannot be repaired. Lo needs a computer to do homework and I would use it for the Internet and possibly to work from home.

Should I get an iPad or is it best to get a home computer? Also can anyone give me some recommendations as to which is the best computer or iPad to buy, as I don't have a clue. Thanks.

Having seen how my DCs tend to use computers for homework I don't think that an iPad would be a viable alternative. They'll often flick between several websites to gather information and then switch to Word (or PowerPoint) to write it down. That kind of workflow doesn't suit iPads very well. I've no idea if, or how, one would copy a picture off a website and paste it onto a document on an iPad either.

Hi merry. I don't think an ipad can replace a desktop/laptop if you want to work on it - certainly I couldn't use mine for proper work. Great for the internet, and you can get apps that let you do some spreadsheets/word processing etc but they're a bit limited. So, for homework or working for you I think you'd need a laptop/desktop. Or even a netbook would probably do, but would be a bit slower with fewer bells and whistles (but I managed all work on one for 6 months when all my stuff was in storage).

Ah that's interesting, so I will avoid the ipad, as I see your points about it not suiting my lo's needs etc. We did have a laptop, but I think after hearing the practicalities etc from you both I would prefer a home computer.

I know they can be quite expensive, but I would not want to get one that does not support what my lo or I could do on it, in terms of speed and storage space for saving lo's homework and my work etc. Can you recommend one?

Ah, I'm afraid that's where my expertise runs out... I always have to ask my Dad!

iPads are great add ons and i adore mine but I wouldn't have it instead of a laptop. I wouldn't go for a desktop these days unless you work from home/have a designated space for it etc. There's not much a laptop can't do for run of the mill stuff.

This Lenovo looks reasonable. It comes with 3 years support. It will need a monitor and some software.

I do like laptops, but I'm edging towards the computer, as I think we could do with having it positioned in a dedicated spot just for studying. When we had the laptop it was everywhere and I think lo could do with a quiet study area. I've had a look at the Lenovo, it's very reasonable, but I worry about spending a huge amount on a computer over the Internet. I think I'll have to pop down to a PC world and have a chat to them. What's your budget?

If you have a decentish budget I'd highly recommend an all-in-one computer. The imac is incredibly expensive but you can get PC versions to suit all budgets.

What this means is less tangle of cables. Typically the only cable will be your power cable. They'll usually be quieter and maybe consume less power.

I wouldn't go to PC World myself. Misco is a reputable outfit and Lenovo is a good brand, but I understand that not everyone is comfortable buying on the internet.

Is there a small local computer shop near you where you might get good advice from experienced staff, not a sales pitch from a spotty teenager?
