why I cant i delete properly on my mac?

Ive got deleting issues. im sure my mac used to allow me to delete with back space but I cant do it now without using arrows and shift keys and then typing over it.

Its driving me INSANE....

What am I doing wrong?

could it be some kind of scroll lock/Fkey issue?? I've not had it with deleting but i'm forever accidentally turning off one of the locks which causes havoc.
Or this? Go into Tools>Options>Edit and check Typing replaces selection.

What does the Backspace key do? (

Nothing on its own. It works for somethings if combined with function.
