No sound on laptop suddenly?

Microphone icon in bottom right has a big red cross next to it, but when I troubleshoot sound it says everything is working.

Any ideas please? Laptop is Toshiba satellite and was working perfectly until Saturday.

By microphone icon I assume you mean the speaker icon. If your icon has a big red cross then that means you have muted the speakers. Some laptops have a function key that will do that. Sounds like you accidentally hit the button.

Hover your mouse over the icon. The pop up that allows you to adjust the volume will appear. Untick the mute box.

Right, have fiddled...that was what I guessed had happened, the pop up though, tells me "disabled" and is no longer clickable at all.

Bloody windows 8 and it's touchy-feely sensitivity, that's what it is.

Will have another fiddle and see if I can find the function key I've undoubtedly caught.
