I just asked about this on another thread but thought I'd start a new thread in here. My almost 7 year old son wants to me to download Minewars on the laptop. He plays Minecraft on the ipad and wants to try minewars now. I'm a bit unsure about downloading anything so am looking for other people's experiences, especially about safety and doing this securely, plus whether it is age appropriate.

Thanks.

I don't play it, but my understanding is that minewars is just an add on pack for minecraft which lets you build star wars stuff.

So I'd say, you're fine to download it and the experience won't really be any different security wise from minecraft.

You would need to have minecraft installed first though for the minewars pack to work.

I think the OP is probably talking about this which appears to be a public PvP Minecraft server with hacks/extensions to implement classic PvP scenarios (CtF) as well as the less subtle "Deathmatch".

PvP means Player vs Player - i.e. the whole idea is to go around killing other players' avatars. Being based on Minecraft this is presumably done in a pretty ungraphic way, but you may or may not think that this is appropriate for a 6 year old. Whilst you may think "its no different from cowboys and indians/cops and robbers/Eighth Army vs. Afrika Corps (my personal favourite in about 1970)", on public servers there is no effective age censorship and you wouldn't want your 6 year old being shot at by 13 year olds would you?

Blimey that all looks quite complex! Currently he just plays the simple Minecraft app on my ipad... Think we may be sticking with that for a few years! Thanks for the info.

I think you need to clarify what your DS actually wants, the PvP MrAnchovy refers to and the Starwars texture pack both exist! I'd say the PvP isn't really suitable for a 6 year old but the Starwars texture pack (which is basically an add on that makes Star Wars themed items/graphics available) would be fine.

Thanks Naoko. And do you know if that's available for the app on the iPad?

Neither are available for the iPad app: the iPad is not a platform that lends itself to 3rd party/community contributions.
