Mario Bros compatibility...

Ds has told me he wants the Super Mario Brothers 2 game for his birthday. But from what I can see, it's designed for the 3DS. Ds has a DS XL. It won't work will it?

No, "New Super Mario Bros. 2" is for 3DS only. It won't work with his, sorry.

Oh god Pedro you've the hit nail there. Just told DS, did not think it was that big a deal, he is in the bath still sobbing about it. He's had a 10 minute rant about how all the best stuff is for 3DS and how he's been looking forward to having that game for months (I did tell him about 4 months ago that he could have it for his birthday...not realising obviously).

BTW he is upset about the game not being compatible, not upset in a spoilt brat way.

But it got me thinking, there is a possibility I could part exchange his DS for a 3DS, but before I even look into it, is a 3DS really so much better as he was making it out to be?

No, not really. My eldest has one (bought second hand) and he spends more time playing it with the 3D off than on... The main problem is not that the 3DS is all that much better - it's that Nintendo are going to be releasing more and more games only on that device, and bothering with ones for ds/dsi.

Doh, I get it now, it's 3D as in 3 DIMENSIONAL!
I wonder if DS even knows that as he doesn't even like watching 3D films. Ok, I get it, it's a later version.

As DS dramatically ranted in the bath, how bloody greedy of them to not make all the games compatible on all the DS versions.

Just to clarify, even ignoring the 3D element, it's still a different console, it has better graphics, a faster processor, etc, etc.

They could have called it something different rather than using the "DS" tag which would have highlighted that it's not just a DS with 3D capability, but DS is a big brand name and it is still back compatible. I think they may have missed a trick with getting the message across that it is actually a whole new thing though.

This is why they are not compatible, games-wise. It's like saying why can't I play DS games on a Gameboy or PS3 games on a PS2. The DS has been around for a decade now, so calling them greedy might be a bit of an exaggeration
