Scanning old negatives

I have a box full of old 35mm negatives and have been wondering about scanning them so that I can store them digitally.

Does anyone have any recommendations for the type of scanner I should buy? I've seen a few on Ebay but not really sure if they're any good - prices seem to be about £30 or £40 on Ebay....

Also, when I scan the negative, what do I then see on my computer? The actualy photo? Or just the black and white negative, if you see what I mean? If I want the actual photo, do I have to scan the old print too?

You've got three choices really.

1. a flatbed scanner with a negative attachment
2. a dedicated film scanner
3. getting them scanned professionally

Personally I'd probably go for option 2, as option 1 takes ages and option 3 is expensive.

You'll see the actual image on your computer, the scanners are designed to scan negs so will automatically change them. You are better off scanning negs rather than prints.

I'm not sure about prices as it's been a while since I've looked at them.
