Why am I being told to uninstall iTunes?

Tried to sync my iphone yesterday and got an alert telling me that because Apple Mobile Device Support needs to be updated, I have to uninstall and then re-install iTunes. In the meantime, iTunes won't even recognise my phone so it can't be synced.

I can't understand why this is happening - I've got the latest version of iTunes so why is AMDS out of date? In fact I'm wondering whether this is anything to do with the fact that I updated the phone to IOS 6.1.2 as prompted.

I'm reluctant to go to the lengths of uninstalling - it seems like a major undertaking. I've tried re-starting AMDS as some people advise, but that hasn't cured it.

Anyone else had this? What did you do? Is uninstalling iTunes as terrifying as I think it is?
