Am looking to buy one of the above for DD and possibly one for me too. It will be a joint birthday present from us and grandparents for DD (9) and she's also saved up some of her own money towards it.

DD will be using hers primarily for reading and games.

I'd like to use mine primarily as a family organiser/ calendar (and would like to be able to sync it with DD's calendar if that's poss) and also for basic internet stuff (mumsnet, amazon, tesco and possible banking) and possibly for reading (although I still like my books made of paper!) Can anyone tell me about the organiser on the kindle fire? I currently live by the calendar on my sony xperia phone (Astrid tasks combined with calendar) but am looking for something bigger and better.

I like the idea of me and DD getting the same thing and learning to use it together etc... but not sure if it's sensible given that we want it for different things. Would like to pay the mimimum I can, but will pay a bit more if it's worth it.

I can't really understand the difference between the Kindle Fire and the Kindle Fire HD (??) Don't mind that the kindle is tied to Amazon as I buy just about everything there anyway! I don't want lots of fancy apps that are complicated to use so I think it's probably not worth paying the extra for the nexus (???)

Any advice would be very welcome!!

The HD is basically just a higher resolution screen and a slightly different size case.

Depends on you budget though. As the HD and Nexus are similar in price there is literally no reason whatsoever to buy the HD, the Nexus is superior in every category. If you want to save cash though, the regular Fire should suit your needs.

Thanks Pedro. Looks like I may go for the Kindle Fire. I believe that they were only £99 before Christmas so am hoping that Amazon has a flash sale on them in the next few weeks... probably will not happen but I have them in my basket ready to buy two if it does!!

They were indeed £99 before Christmas which made them a no brainer (got one for DW). Wouldn't hold your breath on that price again for a while though.

At normal price I think I'd still go for the Nexus because it's not just the fact that Kindles are locked to Amazon, they have a highly modified version of Android which is far less customisable. That said, this may be exactly what you are after!

I have the kindle fire and its brilliant.
The screen is sharp and a good size.

Thanks everyone. I think I'm going to go with the kindle fire based on price and its simplicity (I can get android apps for my phone and I just found it a world of confusion and gave up!) Would be lovely if Amazon could just bring it down in price again...
