I am in the process of converting my DVD collection into digital files so they can be streamed around my home network.

DVDs are not that high res, so is there any point in encoding at HD when the source material is not HD? Is there anything to be gained by say increasing the bitrate or number of frames per second?

Simple answer is no. You're not going to suddenly get better quality unless you are upscaling the source data.

Thanks, that's what I thought... will experiment a bit with bitrate to see what gets a good compromise between quality and filesize.
