Very excited to get my first iPad this week! I'm a long standing iPhone user, but would be interested to hear what people love using their iPad for and any great iPad apps.

Thanks!

At the moment my DD uses it a lot for watching her favourite programmes (live on a boat, move around a lot, so not always good tv reception).

I love the PlaneFinder and ShipFinder Apps, I'm sure there are free "lite" versions of both to try.

Newsstand - I'm getting used to reading on the iPad, and I also have the kindle app.

PestoFrostissimos · 25/01/2013 23:18

I'm interested inthis too, having only had an ipad since Christmas...

FannyBazaar · 25/01/2013 23:24

Watching telly in bed, reading books, photos, watching Gangnam style over and over on youtube, surfing in bed, listening to itunes (streamed to speakers).

TheJanuaryProject · 26/01/2013 12:02

I must have a look at newsstand - I never bothered with it on my iPhone as it's too small. Do you download tech publication app, then about can pay to subscribe to the magazine?

Any other apps that you can only really appreciate on an iPad? any good ones for 4-5 year old that don't have loads of in-app purchases and ads? I know you can disable them though.

Is love that you can download programmes from the bbc I player now and save the a for 30 days. Brilliant for long travel!

You can disable in app purchases and ads....? someone please tell me how!

TheJanuaryProject · 26/01/2013 14:37

Sorry, I meant I know how to disable in app purchases, not the ads. Go to settings, general and choose restrictions - you can then switch it off.

Ace! Thankyou :)

nannynick · 26/01/2013 18:03

Mostly for watching iPlayer in bed, and for Mumsnet to be honest. I've only had it since Xmas though, so not really explored what apps are out there that would be used.

Tinkerisdead · 26/01/2013 18:15

I find it faster to switch my ipad/iphone into airplane mode when i hand it over to dd who's 4. Then i can switch it back on when i use it. As its the first button on settings its far quicker than setting restrictions.

I use mine for online learning, doing photography course bia groupon and can download the content to be offline. Kindle app, mumsnetting - of course! Online banking and i use the OnTrees app for budgeting.online shopping using tesco app, amazon and next.

Dd who's 4 is currently doing a maths app called math age 4-6 that works through modules. Its excellent. She did the 3-5yrs easily so i moved her to the next one but its tricky for her. Covering fractions, symmetry etc so possibly better for a 5 yr old. She also uses coin calc to learn about money and adding it etc. abc pocketphonics is good too. Oh and she loves cut the rope.

Reaa · 27/01/2013 00:21

For me Smile

TheJanuaryProject · 27/01/2013 08:53

Thanks for those app suggestions TheDoctorsWife. I like the sound of your online photography course - wold you mind sharing a link?

OP posts:
Tinkerisdead · 27/01/2013 14:20

I cant do a link because the course comes up as about 350.00 or something. Twice now its come up on groupon for 50.00 so i'd suggest searching groupon deals and checking to see if it comes round again.

Hay Day - my sister told me about the game (for me, not DD), warned me it was addictive & she's right. I was still playing at 1:30 last night!

AbsintheMinded · 29/01/2013 10:50

I'm playing Hay Day too.

I use mine for MNing, emailing, skyping, messages. Like the Paprika app for keeping my recipes together.

I learned how to use the Guided Access mode and that's very good for when DD wants to play. She can't get out of the app so gets bored after a bit and toddles off.

nannynick · 31/01/2013 13:30

I keep getting trouble connecting to HeyDay. even when it does work, it drops the connection after a while.
Is that common, at the moment it says they are doing maintenance. it's lunchtime, can't we play!

nannynick · 31/01/2013 13:31

Or Hay Day even. Wonder if there is one called HeyDay?

AbsintheMinded · 31/01/2013 18:36

hayDay does seem to go on the blink at lunchtimes typically. they are probably US based though. I haven't noticed it happening everyday though.

Mine works fine other than the maintenance updates. might it be your Internet connection? I can't use it if my Internet is on a go slow.

OhMyNoReally · 31/01/2013 18:48

I use mine for organisining the house, the kids and myself. Me books is a great app, as is apps gone free - it tells you the apps that are free for a limited time only, toca band is also fun.
For ideas for kids apps common sense media is a good website for reviews.
I love music apps and ones for memory and observation, I also have some cookery and exercise apps. I have a neurological condition and fibromyalgia so I use it to improve my memory and to increase fitness. As well as entertain the kids. I think the I pad is so great as it becomes an extension of yourself.

snozzlemaid · 31/01/2013 18:59

On my new iPad mini and loving it - much better than iPod touch which I used before.
I'm loving hay day too. Very addictive.

KeepCalmAndCarryOnMNing · 01/02/2013 13:32

Thanks for all the suggestions!

Southeastdweller · 01/02/2013 18:07

How're you getting on?

I use mine for MN'ing and other web browsing, Twitter, and watching films I've downloaded from iTunes and TV shows from iPlayer. Because it's so much quicker than my Windows laptop, I use my iPad much more. I'm probably not making use of even a quarter of it's capabilities but what I do use it for is invaluable.

Worth every penny.

KeepCalmAndCarryOnMNing · 02/02/2013 09:55

I absolutely love it Southeastdweller. Some of my favourite apps I've been using on my iPhone but things like newsstand, rss reader apps, Evernote etc are so much better on an iPad. I've found a journal app which I like too I just have to get round to using it.

I like things like Pocket, for saving things to read later too. That will be brilliant for travelling.
