Laptop is stuck on startup repairs

My laptop has now been stuck on startup repairs for about 28 hours. It won't let me turn this off. Just stuck on it with the blue line going across the screen...

I tried turning it off with the power button but when I reswitched it on it was still performning stratup repairs...

Argh - how do I get it to stop or actually do something else? It hasn't restarted the computer as far as I am aware - but I have been asleep!

I did drop it yesterday morning from the sofa but it continued to work fine for another hour or so more before restarting itself but then starting this startup repairs thing.

Would it help if I turned it off and removed the battery?

Removing battery didn't work. It's still running startup repair.

Could have damaged a hard drive sector. You may be able to reinstall Windows if you have the disc that came with it.

So if I can find the disc then I can just put it into the machine and it will load? At the moment I can't get past a grey background with the startup repair message coming up.

When its starting up do you get the option to press a key for the startup menu?

No. It just goes straight to startup repair now. Initially it asked if I wanted to start windows normally or do repairs on a page with lots of writing and numbers.

Is the progress bar progressing?

cece · 22/01/2013 20:51

Not as far as I know. I have left the power caable out today and been at work all day so not checked it yet.

It was just a blue line travelling repeatedly across the bar. No prgress that I could see.
