ds has one very similar but we also got Office 2010 included for a similar price. Also from Argos. My main issue is with the mouse which if you trail finger behind may make text smaller !

Lizs how old is your ds?
This is going to be my main computer, so needs to be a pepper grown up spec iyswim...

I have absolutely no idea-I am gadget mad about tablets and phones but so meh about computers!

He's 14 and uses it for most of his homework etc

LIZS · 29/12/2012 12:05

and I've been using an older version for work recently

Seems a reasonable spec (6 GB of RAM, even if some is used for display, is better than one with 4 or 2 GB, massive hard disk as they are getting much cheaper these days, and for general purposes, should be fine).

Unless you really need MS Office, you could download OpenOffice or LibreOffice (both free, long story about how they came about and Wikipedia has the history).

Probably worth going to AVG Free for (free) anti-virus (they have a free App for Android tablets/phones too) rather than using something already installed (that will need paying for in 30/ 60/ 90 days).

Theas18 · 31/12/2012 11:44

Thanks both!

I have bought it and the 1st thing I put on was AVG free ! It's my favourite, and I feel I understand it a bit- had it on the old PC and never a problem.

Now got to be brave and delete the macafee that is also i think running and slowing it up.

I'm not feeling any window 8 lurve though yet, despite being very android and ipad competent so very into apps. I guess I'll get used to it...

Annoyed microsoft have fallen out with google so my preferred google sync based set up was tricky to get going, and google drive folder isn't supported at all- have to do it all on line- grr!!

Next challenge migrating itunes... I'll ask about that separately!

Saw a thread on HotUKdeals about Windows 8 (which then went on to discuss 'making Windows 8 appear more like previous versions of Windows' by installing additional software).

A search for 'Google Sync on Windows 8' seems to find mostly bad news in that what Google had supported will, from end of January, not be available on free GMail accounts (but will still work for those who are using it now).

Although I have a few GMail accounts, I don't use Google Sync so have no knowledge on best options / solutions for you, sorry.
