Definitive answer needed...Nexus 7 or Glaxay Tab2 10.1?

HauntedLittleLunatic · 04/12/2012 22:38

I think the Nexus seems to be slightly better spec on paper.
But DCs are used to seeing the 9.7" iPad3 screen and frankly the 7" Nexus looks tiny in comparison. I know size isn't everything and the samsung is still a v v v good spec.

I may be able to acquire said tablet after bedtimes so I 10" may be more useful

So I think I can get the Nexus 7 for £178 (CPW), 16Gb or the
Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1 for £187 after cashback deal from CPW or Tesco.

So definitive answer. Which to go for? What can one do that the other can't? Is there anywhere I can compare important stuff like battery life etc...

nexus 7 32gb is £179 at carphone warehouse :)

HauntedLittleLunatic · 04/12/2012 22:45

That would be the one I was looking at then. Don't think I need 32Gb and think I should be able to get the 16Gb for £160ish but not sure where....

i think google play sell.it for £159? we are getti.g the one from carphone warehouse for pur boys for xmas. the extra memory means they can each have an individual account on it etc and better for films. plus i want it and its a really.goid deal

have only heard good things about the nexus, reviews are more mixed with the samsung.

HauntedLittleLunatic · 04/12/2012 22:54

Yeah just seen that it is £170 with shipping from google and that is basically the cheapest you can get. In which case the 32Gb absolutely makes sense.

I'm just really worried that in the eyes of a child the 7" will look inferior to the iPads which the older siblings have got (issued by school - I haven't paid for them!). I am also disappointed in the price of the Nexus after thinking I could get it for £159...

Bump for the morning crowd.

I don't like the fact that the nexus can't run flash (without some jiggery pokery).
I don't like the fact that the guts of the tab mean that the newest gaming apps are incompatible...

I have the google nexus and I love it. £159 from google play (16gb). I use it loads and the screen size is fine (dont watch films tho, mainly use it for browsing). The samsung cashback deals look tempting but read the smallprint re cashback - there are loads of stories of people being refused their cashback because they didnt adhere to dates.

HauntedLittleLunatic · 07/12/2012 11:36

One last bump...

I think the nexus is winning....but concerned about screen size....

I Love my galaxy tab! You really need to see the two next to each other! Nexus is small compared to 10inch tab!

HauntedLittleLunatic · 07/12/2012 12:43

I know! The only advantage of the tab is size....I think....

I have the Samsung Note 10.1 9010 (which I think supercedes the Tab.. it is quite new) and I couldn't praise it highly enough. I prefer android which it is...

orangepudding · 07/12/2012 12:56

I have the Nexus and love it, my three children all use it with no problems - screen size is fine for us!

PedroPonyLikesCrisps · 08/12/2012 08:18

Nexus 10 perhaps? Or Galaxy Note 10.1? Depends on your budget though. If screen size is key, I'd splash out a little more. Consider that it's likely to be a long-ish term investment so you want to make sure you get something at the top of the game now so it's not a pensioner in 6 months time. You can't upgrade tablets like you can PCs so the choice is more important.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 12/12/2012 21:34

what did you go for? i am on the horns of an identical dilemma...

HauntedLittleLunatic · 12/12/2012 22:15

I went for the nexus 10.

I went into cpw and they convinced me the Samsung was more adaptable and an upgrade to android available early in New year (note there was a Samsung rep instore at the time). But they were out of stock on both but expecting more of the nexus in stock before christmas. I walked out expecting to go and get the nexus as soon as in stock.

So I went to Tesco and got chatting to the expert (note that he was a Samsung rep who apparently used to work for Asus.....). He convinced me that although the Asus chipset is without a doubt better the Samsung overall package is probably better. Nexus only has forward facing webcam. Samsung has 5mp (?) Camera plus forward facing camera. Can't expand the memory on the nexus (although the cpw was 32gb).

What swung it for me was that they had the Samsung in stock (but only 6) and I was getting a bit nervy about getting hold of them.

Correction: I went for the samsung galaxy tab 10 (dont think the nexus 10 is available yet is it?)

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 12/12/2012 22:19

lol i'm getting nervy as well, everyone seems sold out of the nexus. have you tried the samsung yet?

kissmyheathenass · 12/12/2012 22:25

The Google play shop has nexus 7 in stock aitch.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 12/12/2012 22:27

oh yes, sorry, i'm being dense saying 'everyone' when what i meant was 'john lewis'. lol. Grin

HauntedLittleLunatic · 12/12/2012 22:34

Nope. Kids are going away at the weekend so I think santa may be having a play set up then.

OP posts:
HauntedLittleLunatic · 12/12/2012 22:50

The cpw nexus is the 32Gb version for £179. Definitely better value than £170 from google play for 16Gb (delivered), especially as memory not expandable.

Worth bearing in mind (even if it is for a price match from john lewis).

The Samsung rep (yes him again) told me that Asus had there last 3 shipments held up in customs which is why stock problems. If they are hitting the markets again could well see them in JL soon.

OP posts:
AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 12/12/2012 22:58

i don't think i know what cpw is, sorry, but yes, that was exactly my thinking re google play. that extra tenner on postage is a killer, for some reason.

AitchTwoOhOneTwo · 12/12/2012 22:59

CARPHONE WAREHOUSE! Grin i'm with you now.

HauntedLittleLunatic · 12/12/2012 23:17

Sorry.

They advertise it as £159...but the only place I've seen it as that is google play with steep delivery charges...just takes the excitement away somehow....
