Screen resolution problem on PCM

Can anyone help? I switched on the PC today and the screen resolution had changed to minimum, so icons are enormous on screen and most are missing. I've gone into display properties, settings and used the slider to choose a medium resolution, clicked apply. Slider just moves back to minimum and doesn't apply the new settings.

I've restarted, same thing. Any ideas what's going on? Be very grateful if you can help because PC almost unusable at mo.

When you start the PC is it going into Safe Mode?

iloverhubarb · 01/12/2012 20:34

Hello niceguy
No, it just goes through usual interminable start up, (old) then on to a weirdly changed desktop. Icons all much bigger, colours changed etc

It could be a problem with your display drivers?Have you had a look in Device Manager? What version of Windows are you using?

iloverhubarb · 02/12/2012 10:29

version is Windows XP home.

Have looked at the device manager and troubleshoot option. This doesn't seem to consider a situation where all working well, then suddenly not. Looks as if it might be worth uninstalling and then reinstalling the display driver, but frankly I feel this is beyond me.

I am managing to use the PC now, just putting up with large font and odd other weirdness. At start up today, front display screen was perfect at first, then screen went blank for a while, and then the revised, incorrect screen came up. Confused

OK firstly do you see any ? on the device manager. I assume not.

Next thing to try then is to look at the screen resolution. What does it say? Does it say something like 640x480 or 800x600 or is it much higher?

Check your Windows theme/style too in case someone changed it to have ridiculously large fonts but I'm guessing this is not the case.

Lastly if all else fails, can you have a look in Accessories for System Restore? You may be able to find a checkpoint before the problems happened and restore the PC back to that date.

Oh and you can delete the display driver in Device Manager and it should reinstall when you reboot.

iloverhubarb · 03/12/2012 09:47

OK, says 'NVIDIA Display Panel Extension cannot be created. Reinstall Display Drivers'. So far have dared update driver, which has run fine but not sorted problem. Just plucking up courage to uninstall display driver and reboot. It's plug and play, so I'm sure you're right that it will just reinstall.

Thanks for all your help
