Get rid of TV and use our mac?

Our tv is on the point of dying and we're considering getting one of these Elgato EyeTV dongles thingies and using our Mac instead of replacing our tv. Has anyone tried this? Review online seem a bit mixed... Ideally we want to be able to receive Freeview channels and record to a hard drive. We live in a tiny flat and are about to move somewhere even smaller, so if we could just have one screen it would make a big difference space-wise...

Remember you still have to have a TV licence even when you are watching TV on a Mac

Yep, we weren't planning to stop paying for our TV licence. We just don't really have space for a TV and computer in our living area and prefer in general for things to look uncluttered.

Bumping in the hope that someone with experience on the technical side of this might see it and be able to advise? Our TV has now officially died, so we're just relying on iplayer and itv player YouTube etc. at the moment. It would be nice to be able to watch and record Christmas telly this year...

Thanks in advance!

No advice on the recording side of it. But www.tvcatchup.com is good for watching live TV albeit at a lower than normal quality. It's OK though if you sit a normal distance away, just looks horrible if you are sat close.

Thanks niceguy2 I'll check that out.

I'm considering doing the exact same as you OP, I'll keep my eye on your thread Smile

We did this about five years ago and never regretted it. We used eyeTV for a while but then just gave up tv pretty much after a while. We don't miss it at all, in fact I prefer not having all the crap in my head anymore. We all three just watch iPlayer occasionally now. Not sure if that helps or not...
