Please help get my DVD player working before DD's sleepover tonight!

So, I have got myself into a ridiculous situation where I still have no DVD player on the day of DD's sleepover. Or at least, I bought one this morning (last one I bought on Amazon and sent to THE WRONG ADDRESS!!) and now...

I have connected it with an HDMI cable to the TV. Switch the power on and a welcome/set-up screen comes on. It stays for about 5 seconds and then goes to a screen saying "Out of Range". It does this every time I try it. The connections don't feel loose.

So where is the problem likely to be? If anyone can help, I'd be extremely grateful - have just tried to contact the shop and they cut me off after 15 minutes so no help from there.

Which dvd player did you buy? Out of range seems like an unusual message. It's it trying to connect to wifi or something?

A Toshiba Blu-ray player. It doesn't say that it's trying to connect - I've switched source to HDMI on the TV, so it should be using the cable, I would've thought.

It gets it for a few seconds, but then loses it again. But doesn't lose it entirely, because when I switch off the DVD player, the TV screen changes to "No signal".

Try changing the DVD player output to NTSC.

I can't find a way to do that.

The integral DVD player in the TV has stopped working, so I wonder if this is an issue with the TV as well? Can't be the cable if it works for 5 seconds, can it?

Try a different HDMI cable? Also, if you have another tv which will accept an HDMI input, you could test the player there (assuming you've not already done this).

Otherwise, see what happens if you push or move the cable where it is connected (to player or TV).
Only saying this because I connected up an HDMI cable last week and got no signal. Touched the plug - got a signal. It was very flaky and if I moved the cable/PC a tiny fraction, this affected the output.

I have tried moving the plugs of the cables, with no change. We don't have another TV, but I see my computer has an HDMI socket, so could I try it on that?

Yes, plug the computer into the TV to check TV is OK with it. What make and model TV is it? If you decide to try another HDMI cable, Poundland sometimes has them (as it's not really worth spending 10 or 15 quid if the original cable is also OK).
