Have a contract phone from Orange with several months left to run. Have cracked the screen (muppet).

Will the sim from this phone work in another unlocked phone?

In a word, yes.

I'm not on Orange but the only issue I can think of is that it may not automatically update the settings on the temp phone to allow you to surf the internet. In which case just google "Orange APN settings" and follow one of the links.

So they don't check the imei when the phone is used?

I'm sure they'll know on the system but they don't care. The only thing they care about is if you stop paying your bill!
