Ipod touch set up, please help!

Have just brought a touch for my son for Christmas and am trying to set it up for him to make sure it works and so it's ready to use.

Have set him up a user name and password and have just tried going on apps to download a free game, each time it won't let me saying you are not a member of the administrative group.

What does this mean???

Are you downloading the game on iTunes on your Mac/PC or directly onto the Touch?

I'm not familiar with the specific message you mentioned but it sounds like a message you would get on a PC if you were trying to do something from a non-
administrator profile.

It sounds like Apple's ID system doesn't like some aspect of the details you entered when setting up his user name and password.
My tip would be to visit the Apple ID page:
appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/

Log in with the details you used for your son, and check that all the fields are populated. Oh, and if your son is 13 or under, this could be causing the problem as Apple IDs need the user to be 14 or over. If you son is less than 14, your options may to set up an account using your own details, or bump up his age in his application to 14.

I know this isn't like access to Facebook for a 10yo or 11yo, but doesn't the willingness of parents to 'fib' about things like age, to get around a problem, give the wrong impression?

If it's OK for this, then expect the "Why can't I have ?" later on, and then there are the porn sites which ask 'are you over 18 / 21' and we know how much most parents detest porn being easily available...

OK, iPod situation not really a big issue, but I see it as a bit of a slippery slope and not sure "just this time" is enough to stop the descent down that slope...

Er, I didn't bump up his age?

I phoned apple for advise and due to his age they advised me to add my ID to the touch so if he wants to download a game/music/film or go on the web, I have to enter my ID and password not his.

It's a safety thing so he can't do it without my permission. Also have set it up so he can't view or download anything unappropriate.

His DOB on there is exactly the same!

Wasn't clear what you had or hadn't done, but it wasn't actually directed at you, was about the general principle, and whether the suggested course of action might lead someone young to consider it as not being important if they were to 'fib'.

Anyway, I don't really have a big problem, as I indicated earlier, but it should make one stop to think if a youngster chooses to follow the example...

The actual advice I gave was that the parent had two options to resolve the technical problem - they could set up an account in their own name, or they could ensure an account set up in the child's name complied with Apple's requirement that ID holders need to be 14 or over. The parent didn't advise how old the child was, but I think it the parent's call to choose how to proceed with resolving the issue via either of these two solutions.
