Advice needed to set up a website (preferably free)

A friend has asked me to look into setting up a website for her.

I'm not particularly tech-savvy, but am argueably marginally more so than her.

Can anyone help?

Are free sites any good/reliable?
Can anyone recommend a starting place for me?

The website is for information purposes.

Thanks in advance.

Take a look at google sites. They have several templates that you can copy.

I need something completely idiot-proof Sad

Thanks for your help

wordpress.com - it's free (as long as you don't pick one of the host-it-yourself options), it's easy to set up and administrate.

if she wants something a little more customisable and individual, look at squarespace.com - you get a free 14 day trial to see if you can get to grips with it, and if not, you cancel and pay nothing. The ongoing charge is not a lot, I don't think.

Wordpress is easier and designed more for people who don't want to mess about with the design of the site beyond picking a basic layout and a colour scheme, Squarespace is a bit more involved.
